D&RGW in San Luis Valley

by Roland Levin, Stockholm Sweden

I have built several of the Walthers kit for GSI bulkhead flat cars. They were built in 1965 and used for transport of wallboards and had two lockers in the A-end of the car for tape cement. You can download a drawing from my download page.

The Walthers kit has been modified:

  • Cut down the bulkheads to correct height
  • Scratch build the two lockers from polystyrene
  • Exchange the plastic deck and bulkhead parts for real wood.

The load is made from balsa wood wrapped in black plastic garbage bag. Tie downs made of phosphor bronze with polystyrene strips to emulate the cardboard that was used to protect the load.
